Gloucester City Council has appointed Steve Morgan as the new Mayor of Gloucester.

In a ceremony that was held in Gloucester City Council’s council chamber, outgoing Mayor Neil Hampson handed over the reins to Steve Morgan for the 2017/18 council year.

The first recorded mayor of Gloucester was appointed in 1228, and since 1483 the city council has appointed a new Mayor at its annual council. As part of the same ceremony Paul Toleman was appointed Sheriff of the city, taking over from Cllr Said Hansdot.

As the Mayor of Gloucester Steve Morgan will be responsible for chairing city council meetings, and is particularly looking forward to fundraising and supporting the local community whilst in the role.

Speaking about his new role, Steve Morgan, Mayor of Gloucester, said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen as mayor, I look forward to serving the people of Gloucester. I will be supporting two local charities this year: Teckles Animal Sanctuary and Footsteps, which plays an important role in the community, providing counselling and support for anyone affected by pregnancy related issues and loss.”

The Mayor’s Chaplain Bruce Clifford will be leading prayers at council meetings for the next year.
