The licensed premises industry of Gloucester will come together on the night of Tuesday 21 January to celebrate the accreditation of the city’s pubs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs at the annual Best Bar None scheme. This will be the fifth year the scheme has been held in Gloucester. BBN is a national award scheme which recognises the practice of responsible management & operation of alcohol licensed premises, leading to an enhanced customer experience and a more vibrant evening economy. The scheme runs in 75 towns and cities across the UK and is now being taken up internationally.
This year, the awards ceremony will be a grand black-tie dinner held at Kingsholm Rugby Stadium. Winners will be announced for individual categories including Best Chain Pub, Best Independent Pub and Best Food Experience; before the best overall winners are announced.
Venues who signed up to Best Bar None in Gloucester were judged by two independent, specially trained assessors who marked against criteria set nationally by the Best Bar None scheme. To reach accredited status, each venue had to meet 42 essential criteria that relate to cornerstones of the Licensing Act including Prevention of Crime & Disorder, Public Safety, Prevention of Public Nuisance and Protection of Children from Harm. In addition, Best Bar None assessment examines staff training and community engagement.
During assessment, each venue must produce policies, guidance documents, risk assessments, training manuals, signage and each was asked to provide written and verbal evidence of good working practices.
Last year, there were 17 venues who met the criteria & reached accreditation status. There were 8 category winners plus Butlers Venue Bar took home the Gold award with Gloucester Guildhall taking Silver and Atik taking the Bronze. This will be the fifth year Gloucester has held the awards night – here’s who’s in the running this year.

The BBN scheme in Gloucester is run in partnership between Gloucester City Council & The Police Licensing Teams.
