An enterprising group of young people are hosting a pop-up shop in Gloucester where you can buy their unique handmade items and get involved in spreading joy!
Young Gloucestershire is a charity supporting young people who face challenges in their lives. It’s pop-up in King’s Walk Shopping Centre until Friday 29th April is being run by its Prince’s Trust team. They’ve handmade a range of items including bags, hats and a wonderful bright yellow t-shirt. All proceeds go to Sunflowers Suicide Support – a charity formed to support those bereaved by suicide.
The public are also being encouraged to pop-in and paint a rock. The aim is to write the hashtag #iamlistening on the rock and then leave it for someone to find, take a picture and use the hashtag on social media to spread positivity and awareness.
Young Gloucestershire (YG) is a countywide charity that supports disadvantaged young people who are facing challenges in their lives, whether it be a disruptive home life, caring for a family member or coping with a mental health issue.
Prince’s Trust Programme Leader, Lauren Greig-Williams said, ‘The charity offers young people practical ways to find confidence and develop the skills to get on track to move into a job, education or training. For a long time, work experience has been very hard to get, as are jobs so we wanted to support the young people who had dreams that are more than achievable by giving them a qualification and the ability to run a business.’
‘With the pop-up, it’s allowing the young people to gain incredible work experience along with raising awareness for Sunflowers Suicide Support. The team has created t-shirts, designing them by hand and developing a legacy that could stand with Sunflowers. They then hand screen printed the t-shirts at inhouse screen printing in Stroud. At Highgrove, the team worked with the Prince’s Foundation to make some bucket hats, and some drawstring bags. The have all been hand cut and sewn so the team could understand the effort levels involved in product creation.’
The pop-up will be open in King’s Walk Shopping Centre, Gloucester for the next 3 weeks between 9.30 and 3.30, excluding bank holidays and weekends, and the unique merchandise is only available in the shop.
Young Gloucestershire has some Princes Trust Level One programmes coming up soon. If anyone is keen to be involved from aged 16-25 and not in education, training or employment, Lauren will be more than happy to share the details.
