Former Gloucester mayor Les Jones dies at 92

Much-respected former Gloucester mayor and high sheriff Les Jones has died at the age of 92.

Mr Jones, who was an honorary alderman at Gloucester City Council, served as high sheriff from 1968 to 1969 and mayor from 1969 to 1970.

Mayor Howard Hyman (LD, Elmbridge) informed those present at last night’s full council meeting at North Warehouse of Mr Jones’ passing.

Councillor Andrew Gravells, who knew him well, paid his respects and said he was person that was always willing to help.

He said: “I’m probably the only member on the city council who served so long ago alongside Les Jones.

“He served the city council extremely well and Gloucestershire County Council. He served his constituents extremely well.

“He was always very willing to help with advice and point out where the pitfalls were. He was always loyal and a well respected citizen of Gloucester that everybody knew of. He will be remembered as a decent and effective local councillor.

“He was respected enormously by councillors from all the parties. He was a real Gloucester character in every sense of the word.”

Liberal Democrat group leader Jeremy Hilton (LD, Kingsholm and Wotton) said he was a very pleasant chap and was very helpful.

He said: “A typical Gloucester Conservative of the time. I’m sure he got on very well with Cllr Gravells.”

Les Jones passed away on January 16 and the age of 92. His funeral will take place at noon on February 7 at Gloucester Cathedral.
