There are safety concerns over a collapsing wall near Gloucester Cathedral.

Part of the wall in Pitt Street has fallen over and barriers have been put up for the safety of pedestrians.

Gloucestershire County Council closed the footway and are monitoring the situation.

But Gloucester City Councillor Rebecca Trimnell has called for more to be done to protect the rest of the wall. She says Shire Hall needs to sort it as soon as possible.

Councillor Trimnell (LD, Westgate) said: “I think it’s a very real safety concern and something needs to be done as soon as possible. I would hate to see an incident occur due to a lack-lustre response to it!”

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said they will keep the footway closed and barriers on site until the wall is made safe.

The county highways teams will continue to monitor the site in the time being.

“We are aware of the issues with the wall on Pitt Street. We have barriered off a section of the footway while the repair is made by the owner of the wall,” a county council spokesperson said.

“We will continue to monitor this site and keep the footway closed until the wall is made safe.”

Gloucester Cathedral has also been approached for comment and asked when the wall will be repaired.
