Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) continues a strong partnership with the city centre council team, focusing on maintaining and improving the cleanliness of our beloved city centre. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to creating an inviting and hygienic environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Joint Efforts in Action
Through this partnership, Gloucester BID and the council team are maintaining initiatives to address cleanliness across key areas of the city. These include:
• High Level of Street Cleaning: Regular cleaning schedules are in place to tackle high-footfall areas and ensure pathways remain litter free.
• Litter Management: Public bins are on a regular waste collection rota within the city centre, particularly in busy commercial zones. The bins are also cleaned on a frequent basis
• Chewing Gum Removal: The City Council have recently invested in a new ‘gum zapper’, a high-powered tool designed to dissolve and remove chewing-gum from services, allowing the cleansing team to work their way around the city removing such waste. It is eco-friendly, battery operated with bio-degradable, natural detergents.
• Seasonal Cleaning Campaigns: Collaborative efforts to prepare the city for major events, holidays, and festivals, ensuring Gloucester always puts its best foot forward.
How Businesses Can Contribute
Businesses are key stakeholders in this initiative. Gloucester BID encourages members to:
• Keep the areas around their premises and their shop frontages clean and free of litter.
• Manage your business trade waste responsibly and legally. Make sure you have an appropriate trade waste contract with an authorised collector, check your collection days and only put your bags out on the day of collection.
• Report cleanliness issues via online platforms, such as Fix My Street or the via the City Council.
• Participate in city-wide campaigns such as “Clean Up Gloucester” days.
Your involvement plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s appeal and supporting the community.
A Cleaner City for Everyone
“Cleanliness is a key element of a thriving city centre,” said Emily Gibbon, Manager of Gloucester BID. “By working closely with the city council, we aim to create a welcoming environment that supports local businesses, enhances visitor experiences, and fosters community pride, making Gloucester and even better place to live, work and play.”
This partnership is part of Gloucester BID’s broader mission to ensure the city centre remains a vibrant and prosperous hub for all. With ongoing collaboration and community involvement, we’re confident Gloucester will continue to shine as a clean and attractive destination.
Gloucester BID meet regularly with the City Centre Improvement team to report any issues, update on progress and to highlight any ‘grotspots’ that could do with a bit more attention.
In 2025 we will be looking at adding to this partnership by setting up a task force to tackle graffiti, investigate bulk buying gull-proof bags and to plan some deep-cleans for the city centre. The BID will also continue to host a monthly tidy-up session, to which anyone is welcome to join and contribute a couple of hours. A simple way to enhance areas and to add to what services the council already has in place.
