For the Fallen concert

May 3, 2014 @ 7:00 pm BST

To mark the centenary of the Great War, on Saturday 3 May 2014, Gloucester Choral Society will host a very special concert featuring poetry, music and wartime classics that kept the county going during those dark times. Taking place at Gloucester Cathedral, the special evening will be a tribute to those who fought and those who kept home fires burning between 1914 and 1918, and include performances by Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra, violinist Hannah Roper, harpist Eluned Pierce and vocalists Lucy Hall and David Stout. Alan Barker will be celebrating the tenacity of the human spirit as he narrates the words of Gloucestershire war poets Ivor Gurney and FW Harvey, while performances of Vaughan Williams’ evocative ‘Lark Ascending’ and Elgar’s solemn ‘For the Fallen’ from the ‘Spirit of England’ are also expected. And in true wartime spirit, Gloucester Choral Society will be encouraging audience members to join in singing classics including ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary‘, ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ and ‘Roses are Shining in Picardy’.
