Developers have been given the go-ahead to build 150 homes on a former RAF base in Gloucester.

Gloucester City Council has granted permission for Vistry Homes Ltd to develop 14.3 acres of land north of Rudloe Drive in Quedgeley.

The site forms part of the wider former RAF Quedgeley base that has now been substantially redeveloped.

The scheme includes a mixture of 120 open market and 30 affordable homes ranging from one bed maisonettes to four bed houses. And the development will include a mix of red brick and some use of render.

The site will also have two acres of public open space including a football pitch with a sheltered dug out and a play area.

Outline permission to develop the site was granted in July last year but councillors last nigh approved details such as access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale for the housing estate.

Various alterations to the layout and design of the proposal have been made since the submission of the planning application to seek to overcome design concerns.

Nexus Planning consultant Daniel Sharp spoke in favour of the proposals at last night’s (November 1) planning committee meeting.

He told councillors that no objections were raised regarding the latest proposals and Quedgeley Town Council’s concerns have been addressed.

“The proposals today have been developed with reference to both the positive and negative comments that were made in respect to the illustrative master plan that accompanied the outline application.”

Chairman Gordon Taylor (C, Abbeymead) said the proposals will add to the city’s housing stock.

“I’m happy with the affordable housing and the mix this time which will see some larger market homes and social homes,” he said.

He proposed approving the scheme and the committee voted unanimously to approve the plans subject to conditions.
