Additional police officers to patrol Gloucester city centre on Saturday night

Extra police will be on patrol in Gloucester tonight as part of an operation to tackle offending in the night-time economy.

Operation Comet aims to ensure the safety of people as they enjoy a night out in the city centre.

Following a successful pilot in the run-up to Christmas, the operation is running again this weekend with additional officers walking the streets.

One of the Constabulary’s dogs will also be out in the city centre and around the Docks, while plain clothed officers will be on patrol to help identify anyone acting suspiciously.

Officers will be looking to prevent youth crime, anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls, and the use and sale of drugs.

They will be working alongside other organisations, including Night Angels, Street Pastors, Night Safe officers, street medics and the licenced premises, to ensure we create a safe space for all.

Members of the public are encouraged to come and speak to officers and let them know any concerns they may have so that they can be acted upon.

Inspector Ash Gardner, from Gloucester’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “People are entitled to enjoy nights out in our city without the fear of violence, harassment or intimidation.

“We will take appropriate action should we find anyone offending. Our increased presence will help prevent crime and make those who wish to cause trouble think twice.

“Everyone has the right to have fun in a safe environment and we will be doing everything we can to ensure that is the case.

“If anyone has any concerns, our officers are more than happy to help so we’d encourage people to come and talk to us.”
