Come and discover your local independent businesses this Independents Week 1-7 July.

Local businesses need your support more than ever and are pulling out all the stops to show you the wonderful array of products, services and experiences they offer while doing their very best to help the high street thrive.

There are over 300 independent traders in Gloucester city centre, from taste sensation restaurants like Aroma, Dough From Dough and Topoly’s to treasure trove shops like Bizarre, Vinyl Vital Signs and Crystals and so many more.

They are owned and operated by families, entrepreneurs and passionate experts bringing their unique energy to the gate streets and beyond – and your backing them impacts their livelihoods and the city centre more generally, directly.

The recently-finished Gloucester Food Dock is now a thriving hub of independently-run food and drink outlets overlooking the city’s fabulous waterfront. It’s taking part in Independents Week for the first time.

Food Dock manager Kyla Hyett said: “Gloucester Food Dock is excited to be participating in Independents Week.

“Supporting local businesses means you are championing someone’s livelihood and investing in our local economy – for our members, each purchase really does have a direct impact on their futures.”

As in previous years, Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) is playing a leading role in co-ordinating and promoting this Independents Week.

BID director Becci Zawadski said: “Local independent businesses are the heart of our communities.

“They drive economic growth and keep our high streets unique.

“Supporting them means investing in our local economy and securing the future of in-person retail experiences.

“Owning and running an independent business in Gloucester shows an investment in our city which is thriving thanks to the continued support of the shoppers.”

Adrian Ball, owner of Kara Hair and Beauty in Southgate Street, spoke of the value independent businesses like his bring to the community.

“As one of the oldest businesses in the city, first opening in 1967, we are proud to invest in apprentices, being one of the few remaining salons to do so,” he said.

“We currently have seven apprentices and take on four every year, many of whom have graduated and set up their own businesses in the city.

“Not only have we created generations of hairstyles, beauty and piercings, but we are also proud to have supported so many new hairdressers over the years.”
