The staff at GL1 leisure centre in Gloucester provide such a welcoming atmosphere that it’s a place where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy.

As a non-profit charitable trust, the main aim of Gloucester’s GL1 leisure centre is to promote the mental and physical well-being of the local community and inspire people to be more active. Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust was established in 2008 to provide sport, leisure and cultural opportunities in Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas. The registered charity invests every penny surplus back into the local community.

The GL1 has gyms and swimming pools along with an on-site spa and spacious café. You’ll also find a bowling hall, exercise classes, gymnastics centre, Lunar City and hire space.

Aspire also runs the Oxstalls Sports Park site where there are 6 indoor and 4 outdoor tennis courts to choose from, a children’s soft play, along with a synthetic pitch and grass pitches for sports such as football, hockey, rugby and cricket.

Customer Service Manager Jackie Porter is passionate about the range of activities on offer, she said, ‘We offer something for everybody, and we really want to invest in the community. We welcome everyone here and have staff and instructors who want to help you get on that road to fitness. We have lots of success stories with people of all ages. It’s great to know you’re making difference and offering a place for people to be active but also social.’

GL1 isn’t just a place for physical development, it also has a Health Hub where local groups are invited to come together for several therapies including help with giving up smoking and supporting people with dementia. Jackie said, ‘It is run by a ‘fantastic group of health professionals who come together to offer these services.’

Current special offers at GL1 include a flexible membership package which can be frozen if any opening changes occur. The £99 for four months offer includes assess to gyms, pools and classes along with the spa which has a sauna, jacuzzi and steam room.

You can enrol your children onto the Academy Swimming Programme. This runs 7 days a week and the 45mins swimming lessons include free general swimming. You can also book your children onto tennis and gymnastics lessons.

An up-coming campaign at GL1 will involve more links with artist in residence – Russell Haines. The centre has also won a bid to host a Bright Nights light installation in February. An international artist will create a structure which will light up the whole of the main pool.
