Business in Focus with Steve & Sarah Martin of So Pie

Perched on the edge of the docks, only a stone’s throw from the quays you’ll find a home-grown restaurant that knows a thing or two about pie…

So Pie is a one of a kind, family-run independent licensed restaurant, specialising in good old-fashioned home-made pies. They take great pride in their dishes, with everything made fresh on site using locally sourced produce. From the peeling of the potatoes to the filling of the pies, these guys really know how to conjure up a 5-star pie experience.

What are So Pie all about?
“It’s simple, good home cooked food the way it should be.”

Their story began 5 years ago at the family home where owner Steve had been toying about with different dishes in the kitchen. Both Sarah and he saw great value in good old British food – feeling that there’s a lack of British cuisine in Gloucester, they decided to take it upon themselves to start their very own specialist pie restaurant.

On the hunt for a premises, they had noticed a building on Llanthony Road that had been empty for around 10 years. Its location sat promptly on the corner of the quays, and that tied in with the recent developments in the area, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a restaurant in an area of good footfall. From this, and with support from business partners at So Thai, they decided to bite the bullet and So Pie was born!

Since then the restaurant has flourished, serving an impressive range of pies partnered with mash, sides and veg. But it’s not all about the food, they also have a great selection of beers, wines, cocktails AND mocktails.

We spoke to manager and co-founder Sarah to find out what she loved about Gloucester, “it’s the people of Gloucester that makes me love it so much, everyone is so friendly and approachable”.

Hot out the oven, her personal choice at So Pie is the Chicken Balti but she also enjoys a Beef Massaman.  Sarah’s favourite place to dine other than So Pie is at partner company So Thai for a Chicken Satay.

• Breakfast Deal, 2 for £12.00 Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm
• 2 pies for £20.00 (meal) includes a pie mash & chips and a side of mixed veg. Monday – Friday, 11am – 6pm
• Lunchtime Special, £9.95 – 2 courses meal (choice of starter or a dessert) with main of pie or quiche with salad. Monday – Friday
