Look out for the start of a more continental theme on Kings Square very soon as The Regal pub introduces outdoor seating at the front of the historic building.
The Regal has been serving loyal customers since 1996 and now, along with the large indoor seating area and courtyard garden at the rear, the pub will have 20 tables at the front overlooking the newly developed Kings Square.
Both of Gloucester’s popular Wetherspoons pubs – the other is The Lord High Constable of England in the docks – are housed in historic buildings. The Regal, takes its name from the cinema it was previously used for. Work on the purpose-built cinema began in 1939, but the outbreak of war soon halted construction. The Regal finally opened in 1955, after government restrictions on cinemas had been lifted.
Manager Hatty Wright loves the ‘retro’ feel of the pub, she said, ‘We tell the story of the old cinema on displays around the building, and there’s still a retro feeling. Customers love telling me about when they visited the cinema and some customers even watched the Beatles play here in 1963!’
Hatty has worked for Wetherspoons at The Regal as pub manager for four years and has been with the company for 13 years. She enjoys the pub and is looking forward to future developments in Gloucester close by. She said, ‘We have some great regular customers from many different walks of life. They all have one thing in common though, which is an appreciation of value for money. It will be great that people can now sit outside the front and I can’t wait to see the developments taking shape around us, especially when the University of Gloucestershire opens in the old Debenhams building. It’s super exciting!’
Like all Wetherspoons pubs, The Regal serves breakfasts from 8am – 11.30am, and has a wide range of main meals from 11.30am all the way through to 11pm. The pub has a range of offers on all day every day, including inclusive drinks with meals and drink bundle offers. The current main offer is ‘Summer Deals’ on a large range of selected drinks. The Regal is a family-friendly restaurant welcoming children under 18 until 9pm. Children’s menus, colouring, and highchairs are available.
J D Wetherspoon was founded in 1979 and the company operates 925 pubs as of June 2021. This includes the sub-brand of Lloyds No.1 bars, and around 50 Wetherspoon hotels. Wetherspoon is known for converting unconventional premises into pubs, such as former cinemas and banks.
