A fantastic range of events both in-person and online are being hosted by the Gloucester History Festival from 4-19 September!

The 2021 offer includes an eclectic programme of talks, events and podcasts to bring together local and internationally known, renowned artists and key community figures in venues across the city.

This year’s programme will include the famed Blackfriars Talks, Heritage Open Days and the national award winning City Voices events following its success in winning the Pandemic Pivot Award at the National Museums and Heritage Awards for the Gloucester Looking Up project.

The Blackfriars Talks on the Theme of Frontiers and Pioneers will offer you interesting insights into the times we live in and how the events and key personalities of the past can help us contextualise the times we find ourselves in today.

With Britain’s top historians and authors covering topics including; historian and TV documentary presenter Dan Snow, who explores the battle of the Imjin River on its 70th anniversary; Author Sathnam Sanghera discussing his bestselling book Empireland and the launch of the History Festival’s own book: Gloucester: Recreating the Past by City Archaeologist Andrew Armstrong and historian and artist Phil Moss.

There will also be an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the filming of BBC2’s hugely successful Raiders of the Lost Past with Janina Ramirez. From Viking ships in Norway to ancient palaces in Crete, she reveals some of the greatest archaeological finds of the last century and the stories of the people who made them.

The City Voices programme encourages you to explore your history and learn how it impacts your life today. Join in a workshop, visit an exhibition and be part of a discussion. These include a Gloucester Tales Podcast, a virtual event hosted and created by Gloucester based writer, Jarek Adams recalling stories of the past, present and future of each of the city centre Cross Streets.

Along with the wealth of events offered by the Gloucester History Festival, the Heritage Open Day events explore Gloucester’s built heritage with tours, talks and open doors at our best loved buildings. Highlights include; Gloucester Cathedral: A Revolution in Stone and The Story of Gloucester’s Pubs and a Victorian walk around Gloucester docks entirely illustrated by old
Photographs.
