Businesses are gearing up for a busy boost of a day at Gloucester Goes Retro this Saturday 28 August!
With only one week to go, the excitement is building for the vintage car, fashion, and music festival which is one of the highlights of the city’s vibrant festival calendar.
Gloucester Goes Retro is organised by the city council and funded in partnership with Gloucester BID and features over 500 classic vehicles filling the historic Gate Streets and Gloucester Docks with a stage in Mariners Square and full size replica Spitfire at Imjin Village.
The four gate streets will be transported back in time: On Westgate Street you can wander through from 1900 to the roaring 20s to the war years. On Northgate Street you can put your best jiving foot forward for a taste of the 50s. Eastgate Street will be returning to the 1960s, when the mini – car and skirt – ruled the world! On Southgate Street you can step back to the 1970s and 80s when disco led the way.
Shops and business will be decorating windows and staff are dressing up to welcome visitors as the streets will be lined with historic and classic cars, and vehicles from all over the country, while music, fashion, food, businesses, banks, shops and re-enactors will all play their part.
Brian Trott of the March Hare Tearooms said, ‘We are so glad Retro Day is back this year and we can’t wait to have the old buses back outside The March Hare again in The Oxebode! To see Gloucester city centre full of people having an amazing day out is so uplifting. I can imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like this year after all we’ve been through.’
Music store, SoundHouse owner Richard Ashton Phillips can’t wait for the Gloucester Goes Retro Festival. He said, ‘Any excuse to dress up in vintage outfits and play some old gypsy jazz. Such a great event!’
And Craig Tucker of the Treasure Seekers and the Cavern is excited. They are also running a costume competition. He said, ‘It’s such an amazing event that brings lots of people into the city, but also an opportunity to get a feel for times gone by, and for some, to relive happy memories! I love getting a snapshot of what things used to look like! We can’t wait!’
Shops, attractions, restaurants and pubs will all join in the fun by creating a retro feel and the event brings the whole city together in celebration of our retro past.
