Last week Emily Gibbon, manager of Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) met up with two of the volunteers from the Canal and River Trust (CRT) Charity, Derek and Tony.
These two have been volunteering for the charity for many years and have been making a difference on land as well as water. Both have a passion make time for water and for Gloucester – one lives on the water, and one loves to play on the water!
Derek and Tony have been working on different projects along the canal and in the Docks with Gloucester based charity Young Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire College, from redesigning green spaces to cleaning the Docks.
The sea-bin, first of its kind in the UK, is situated in Victoria Basin cleaning the water of debris – be it man-made or natural. Its contents get analysed by Young Gloucestershire and the latest results showed that 78% of what is removed is natural and can be composted. And that is what happens in the Docks with Young Gloucestershire and the compost is then used in Derek and Tony’s projects, filling the reclaimed pallet made flower boxes, which are adding colour and flora to the Docks.
Projects such as these adds to the CRT’s prestigious green flag award. This is an award that shows that a space: improves customer experiences, increases the profile, interest and recognition in the canals and surrounding communities.
However, currently, with only one sea-bin, there is the lack of compost for this flowering project and Derek and Tony are calling out to any local business to donate compost and plants for them to complete this project.
‘All donors will be acknowledged accordingly. Please help us finish this project and support the charity’ – Says Tony.
If you can support this project, by donating compost and/or bedding plants, please get in contact, so they can finish planting in the Docks. Please email .
