Squidsoup, the team who presented Submergence within Gloucester Cathedral in 2020, are bringing Submergence back to Gloucester this August, welcoming families to play and explore within the lights, loose themselves and become completely absorbed.

Submergence is a large, immersive, walkthrough experience of many thousands of individual points of suspended lights, animated to create feelings of presence and flowing movement around you.

The installation, opening to the public on Wednesday the 7th of August, offers a highly sensory, open space for families to come together.

Supported by Arts Council England using public funding by the National Lottery, Gloucester BID and The University of Plymouth, Submergence Gloucester is also set to feature a series of specialist workshops, play sessions and special events involving music and movement. The programme of events is brought to the City of Gloucester with support from Vilk Collective, The Music Works, GARAS and more.

The light and sound installation can be found within the shop unit situated between H&M and JD Sports within the Eastgate Shopping Centre and is open to the public between 10am and 5pm from Wednesday 7th August right through to Saturday 31st August, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

One of the free yet ticketed workshops on offer within the Submergence Gloucester programme is ‘Feel The Light Workshop with Vilk Collective’ where families can join performers Roxana Vilk and Peter Vilk as they’re guided to ‘feel the light’, responding to the installation with music using instruments and voice within the highly sensory sound and light installation.

These sessions are set to take place on Wednesday 28th August between 11am and 12pm and Thursday 29th August between 3pm and 4pm.

Bleephaus, an irregular gathering of synth-makers, hackers, circuit benders and noise makers which has run workshops at festivals, art galleries and music venues, is also offering an adventure playground for sound and noise is also offering an adventure playground for sound and noise, introducing creative minds of all ages & abilities to synthesisers, drum machines, musical toys, hand-built instruments and other crazy gadgets.

Jason Robison, Senior Destination Manager for the Eastgate Shopping Centre, commented on Submergence Gloucester:

“Events like this are fantastic for people of all ages to get involved with, and the fact it’s free is fantastic news as we head further into the school holidays and parents look for opportunities to entertain their children on a budget.”
