In its third year, the Gloucester Festival of Archaeology, starting this weekend and continuing until the 30th of July, is a city-wide event that encourages visitors and residents to explore the city and gain a greater appreciation of what lies beneath.

Steeped in over 2,000 years of history, Gloucester has plenty to lure budding archaeologists young and old, much of which is hidden underfoot and above the eye-line.

Explore Gloucester’s ‘hidden’ history with lots to see and do, including:

  • A 3D archaeology trail
  • FREE Activities taking place at the Museum of Gloucester, St Michaels Tower, St Mary De Crypt and The Folk of Gloucester on Festival Day, which is the 29th of July.
  • Eastgate Chamber Tours – Eastgate Street
  • Lego Keep Castle, sponsored by Gloucester BID – Folk of Gloucester
  • FREE BrickBox Stained Glass LEGO® workshops – Folk of Gloucester
  • FREE BrickBox Drop-in Lego workshops – Folk of Gloucester
  • A tale of two castles with Andrew Armstrong – Gloucester Guildhall

Marc Waters, Event Coordinator at The Folk of Gloucester and Trustee of Gloucester Civic Trust, who is organising the festival, commented “By building on the previous year’s activities, the Gloucester Festival of Archaeology will be bigger and better than before! Last year as well as the 3D Interactive art linking the venues, we also had three Lego brick structures, which were built by Brickbox and paid for by the Cathedral Quarter Project.”

“This year Gloucester BID are supporting us by engaging Brickbox to build Lego Gloucester, Castle Keep. By adding creative activities to the venues, we aim to attract a greater audience into the city and increase dwell time so that visitors don’t just spend an hour in the city but all day.”

Gloucester Archaeology Festival is organised by Gloucester Civic Trust in partnership with several organisations and Heritage venues in Gloucester. Working together to bring a host of activities that are designed to benefit residents and visitors alike by encouraging them to explore the city for the day through a range of fun and low-cost activities.

As well as support from Gloucester BID, Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeology Society and EG Carter LTD, the festival has support from local archaeology groups and local experts to bring a whole host of activities that assist in encouraging a greater appreciation of the city and its interesting past.

Businesses in the city will benefit from this increased footfall, which will give them the opportunity to attract new customers who wouldn’t normally think of exploring Gloucester.
