The new fountains at Kings Square boosted footfall by 50 per cent last summer, according to monitoring data.

The £5m makeover was unveiled on the square’s 50th birthday last year and Gloucester City Council hopes it will become a world-class events sapce.

Kings Square’s fountains were once the main feature of the square, surrounded by water pools.

They are now one part of the space designed as a family-friendly destination with shops, eating and meeting places and events.

But their switch-on had an immediate impact on footfall in the area with 30% more people recorded in the area the day after.

And by last summer, the fountains had boosted footfall by 50 per cent.

Esther Croft, development director at Reef, said the fountains were a real step of confidence for the city centre redevelopment.

“When they were switched on in the spring it increased footfall overnight through the square and through the shopping centre by 30%.

“It then went on from that over the summer it ramped up to over 50% increase. It’s incredible.

“It has helped bring a different mix of clientele to Kings Square. We’ve got a lot more families coming in now.”
