Gloucestershire Airport celebrates its 80th Anniversary on Saturday 16th July with a Charity Open Day.
From 11am – 4pm, you’ll be able to get a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at what goes on at the Staverton site, with the opportunity to take to the skies on helicopter pleasure flights and trial flying lessons. There’ll also be refreshments, bouncy castles, a hot air balloon, fire engines, classic cars and other attractions to entertain the family. Weather and serviceability permitting, a Spitfire flypast is also planned at around 2pm. A free shuttle bus will be running throughout the day to take visitors to the Jet Age Museum too.
Operations director, Darren Lewington said: – “Our open days have proven popular in the past and we very much enjoy inviting the public on site to see what goes on at their local airport. This year is, or course, a special anniversary, exactly 80 years to the day that the airport was officially opened. That said, we’re hoping for better weather as that official opening was rained off!
The Spitfire flypast will be the icing on the cake. The iconic WWII fighter also celebrates the 80th anniversary of its first flight this year and the unmistakable roar of a Merlin engine will takes us right back to those early days of aviation.”
Admission to the event is free, but donations to the Airport’s chosen charity, fly2help will be requested.
Darren added; – “Fly2help do great work in bringing the magic of flight to those who need it most in their lives with their ‘Air Smiles’ days and also inspiring youngsters to consider aviation and aerospace careers with their ‘Aim High’ programme.”
