Gloucester City Council has been awarded a share of a £60 million Government fund to make improvements to swimming pools at GL1 Leisure Centre.
The council will receive a total of £432,500 to make improvements to GL1 that will ensure its long-term financial sustainability, by improving energy efficiency in order to keep running costs down.
Funding will see solar panels fitted to the building and variable speed filtration pumps installed in swimming pools.
The bid was one of 325 successful to phase two of the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund.
The Swimming Pool Support Fund has seen £20 million provided by Sport England via the National Lottery, with just over £40 million provided by the Government.
GL1 Leisure Centre is run on behalf of Gloucester City Council by Freedom Leisure.
Ruth Saunders, Corporate Director at Gloucester City Council, said: “We are delighted that GL1 Leisure Centre will be given a significant financial boost.
“This will help to make the building more energy efficient, reducing costs and helping to secure its long-term future for the community in Gloucester.”
