Construction work is due to start next month on the next phase of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine through Gloucester City Centre, and a drop-in event is being held for people to find out more.

The scheme through Gloucester City Centre represents the next phase in the county council’s ambitious cycle spine, extending across the county from Bishop’s Cleeve in the north to Stroud in the south, linking Gloucester and Cheltenham.

Gloucestershire County Council bosses said it will greatly improve walking and cycling options to homes, employment, education and transport hubs, while supporting the county council’s aims of becoming carbon net zero by 2045 and creating a greener Gloucestershire.

The Gloucester City Centre cycle spine will deliver the infrastructure required to provide a new and improved walking and cycling facilities through the city centre, connecting to the wider Gloucestershire Cycle Spine.

Contractors Montel Civil Engineering Ltd have been awarded the contract to build the Northgate and Southgate Street (Parliament Street to The Tall Ship pub) sections of the Gloucester Cycle Spine. The package of work also includes Llanthony Access Road between Sudmeadow Road and Hemmingsdale Road in Gloucester, which will complete the Gloucester South West Bypass project. Work on the Gloucester City phase is due to start from Monday 10 March and is expected to be finished by late autumn 2025. Llanthony Access Road is expected to begin later in the spring.

A meet the contractor event will be held on Wednesday 5 March 2025 between 10am and 6pm at St John’s Lane Northgate Methodist Church, Northgate Street, Gloucester GL1 2AN and will cover Southgate Street, Northgate Street and Llanthony Access Road projects.

The event will provide an opportunity to meet the project team, learn more about the project and schedule of works, meet the contractors’ public liaison officer and ask any questions.

Cllr David Gray, cabinet member for environment, economy and planning, said: “This section through Gloucester City Centre is an essential part of the 26-mile cycle spine we’re building across the county. It will significantly improve walking and cycling options for people, which will help to reduce carbon emissions and encourage active travel.

“I would encourage anyone interested in finding out more to attend the meet the contractor event, as it’s a great opportunity to ask questions and meet the project team.”
