Treasure Seekers, a Gloucester organisation that seeks to help disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the local community, has recently celebrated its second birthday.
The Westgate Street shop, based near the Gloucester Cathedral, has been providing work opportunities to people who wish to secure long-term employment, but have previously lacked the skills and experience to be able to achieve this.
The shop – which sells gifts, homewares and retro sweets – provides placements and training opportunities to allow individuals to gain new skills and progress to new jobs.
As well as providing retail experience, the organisation runs many other initiatives to server the same, or similar, purpose to the shop. This includes The Cavern, a coffee shop and live music venue, located just around the corner from the shop, on College Street.
Originally, Treasure Seekers was established in Tredworth at the Kingfisher Church Social Enterprise; they held discos for people with learning difficulties, and it was from there that the organisation expanded – opening shops in Gloucester and Stroud.
Taking people out of isolation, helping them see their potential and including them in community projects is central to their philosophy.
Their efforts are inclusive, as they run events for people of all ages – including classes for fitness, performance, and confidence-building.
