Tributes are being paid to Gloucester publican, businessman and community stalwart Paul Soden who has died.

Cafe Rene announced this afternoon that he had passed away following a short illness.

Paul will be known to many as the landlord of Cafe Rene on Southgate Street but also the owner of many city watering holes including the Old Bell and Fountain Inn.

Paranormal events organiser and friend of 12 years, Lyn Cinderey said: “I’m truly saddened by this news. I have so much love and respect for Paul.”

“He always gave me good advice and support when I ran my weekly ghost walks and any charity work I did.”

“Paul was the pillar of the community and Cafe Rene was one my favourite places as it was like walking into a family home whenever I went there.”

Butlers owner Justin Hudson said: “I am so terribly sorry to hear this news, He was a stalwart figure within the licensee trade here in Gloucester – He will be dearly missed!”

Cafe Rene has been temporarily closed as a mark of respect and will re-open in due course.
