Gabrielle Faulkner-Aston, Support Small UK Gloucester

As the local host for Support Small UK in Gloucester, I see first-hand just how many incredible independent businesses make up our community. Every day I am blown away by the passion, time, and love that are poured into these enterprises- and it’s beyond measure.

I asked Sophie of Gloucestershire Gloss Ltd (@gloucestershire_gloss) what they wish more people knew about running a small business.

“Running a small business is really time consuming and involved. It’s not a 9-5 job. You’re working all hours to keep the business alive, to grow a legacy for your future generations. You don’t get any days off. Having a small business is like having a small baby that needs constant nurturing to help it to grow and succeed.

It’s hard to compete against large companies. People tend to invest in the person with small businesses, so you really are selling yourself as part of the service. The customer chooses the company because they choose you! Small businesses are very personal. You’re not just a number, you’re a valued member of the team, and a friend of the family.”

We in Gloucester are lucky in that our city is filled with hidden gems, all driven by dedicated entrepreneurs who invest their hearts and souls into their work. This year, during Independents Week, we have the perfect opportunity to show them our appreciation. It’s a time to celebrate local creativity, support the hard work behind every store front, and keep our community vibrant and thriving.

Amy, owner of Kanji (@kanji_japaneseheadspa_), is a prime example of just how passionate our business owners are. When asked what makes their business unique, Amy said:

“What makes Kanji unique is that we provide a spa-like feel in a short period of time. In and around Gloucestershire, we are lucky to have some of the most beautiful spas within the most picturesque locations. However, since the COVID pandemic, taking long days to enjoy spa vacations has become harder to prioritise. This is where Kanji thrives. From our hydration facials to our Japanese head spas, we invite all clients from every walk of life to feel the essence of relaxation in as little as 45 minutes.”

By choosing to shop local, you’re not only investing in products and services – You’re investing in the dreams and aspirations of your community.

Get into Gloucester and make these dreams and aspirations a reality! Shopping the High Street is essential for maintaining vibrant local communities. When you spend money locally, more of it stays within the local community.

Together, we can ensure that the passion and care behind every small business continues to enrich Gloucester for years to come.
